John and Ed arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on Sept.16, 1989 and they left on Sept. 23--I have 4 8x11 pages of notes in my diary so I'll just try to hit some of the highlights (and one lowlight--for me!) of their visit and our trip to Key West---ummmm--IF I remove the X-rated entries I wouldn't have much to write about--KIDDING! (But if you want to read them someday, Ed, come on down!)
9/16/89--went to dinner at the 15th Street Fisheries and then to about 6 bars--on 9/17 John, Ed, Tim, Gary and I brunch at the Marriott--then hit a few other bars--we had dinner at Yesterday's (at one time one of the best restaurants in town on the inter-coastal--no longer exists)
9/18/89--we left for Key West at 1:15--stopped for lunch at Quay's (a landmark restaurant--excellent)--arrived in KW at 5:15--had dinner at La-Te-Da's then went to Saloon and 801 Duval bars
I am getting fatter and fatter--I had to buy a pair of shorts (size 44!!) because my trousers were too tight (see picture) and added red suspenders!
9/19/89--went on the Conch tour--a trolley that takes you around KW and then had lunch at the 'Top of Holiday Inn'--had dinner at La Trattoria Venezia--came home and had a swim in the pool.
9/20/89--the 'old' section of KW is great to walk around--seeing the gingerbread houses with each having a unique pattern around the roof's edges--we left today and had dinner at Georgie's on Sunrise Blvd that evening in Ft. Lauderdale (George Kissinger who owned the restaurant eventually moved to the Wilton Manors area and is responsible for it becoming a major player in the cities growth--he now owns the most popular gay bar in South Florida)--afterwards we went to the Copa and Tacky's--.John made out and Ed and I came home.
9/21/89--had brunch at the Pancake House and then went to the galleria mall--dinner at Gibby's
9/22/89--went to the beach for a few hours then the Marlin Beach Hotel (which was a world famous gay hotel and where "Where The Boys Are" was filmed and started the 'Spring Break' fad)--We had dinner at the Casa Vecchia (one of my favorite restaurants that is now out of business)
9/23/89--John, Ed, Michael and I lunch at Dan Dowd's and then the boys flew back to St. Louis.
I had written in my diary that "I would love to be on vacation all year round!"--well, being retired I can say I am but I am not playing and/or eating out like I use to when I had money and MANY credit cards! LOL
Pictures--starting from the top left clockwise: John on Ft. Laud. Beach--Ed on Ft. Laud Beach--John walking on the beach--me in the 'infamous' shorts and red suspenders--Mallory Square in Key West getting ready to 'celebrate' the sunset--a tradition there with all kinds of acts (jugglers, puppeteers, etc.) performing and a lot drinks being drunk--John and Ed at Quay's on the patio having lunch on the way to KW
