On July 3, 1994 I paid my rent, electric and telephone bills--I had been out of work for 4 months--my savings and checking balances were zero, I had a total of $14.63 in cash--plus I was fatter!
I knew I could use my credit cards for gas, food and cigarettes but August would be coming soon and even if I got a job right away I would never make the bills--and if something went wrong with the car or my health I wouldn't be able to do a thing about it.
In the 70s I received a letter from my friend Sue telling about her circumstances and asking to borrow whatever she could--I was making good money back then and sent her about $2,000 and never regretted it.
Swallowing my pride (not that I had much left) I, too, sat down and wrote a letter to everyone I knew explaining what was happening to me financially--I asked them to send whatever they could and if they couldn't I would understand.
The response really floored me--both those who sent (and some of the amounts they sent both little, and a lot, and I was grateful for every penny) and those that didn't--only 2 didn't respond in anyway--I knew I was lucky man.
The money saw me through the next few months until I got a job in the restaurant at the Hilton Hotel near the airport after 8 months of being out of work!
I am proud of the fact though it took awhile I paid every penny back!
The pictures are of my apartment at that time--the top one is in front of the second bedroom window--I always had hanging plants in windows--and the second is of the 'video nook'--notice all the ACL books on the floor! LOL
