1990s--part 5--pride Goeth Before a Fall

December 9, 2006 / by greatmartin

I woke up one morning and the money was gone--not to mention more than 10 credit cards with over $30,000 charged on them! It didn't happen overnight and I knew where most of the money had gone: 'chasing' after "A Chorus Line", the car, theatre subscriptions to most of the companies around, picking up checks, buying presents for people, buying 'things' for myself, dining out in top restaurants, taking too much time off between jobs etc. I had no one to blame but myself (though I still maintain my parents gave my brother all the financial genes leaving none for me!)

On June 15, 1992, I made an appointment with a bankruptcy lawyer. I felt a lot of shame and disappointment in myself but I didn't see any other alternative. My main concern was being able to keep my car, which the lawyer said wouldn't any problem as Florida laws covered that.

I won't go into what I did between that appointment and July 17 when I officially filed bankruptcy but if you ever contemplate filing bankruptcy CALL ME--I learned a lot AFTER the fact which would have made the next 2 years a lot easier for me. :o(

On September 14 I went to bankruptcy court and came out a much relieved man--the car was mine, I had a job, I didn't have over $600 a month in credit cards to pay--I could breath!

Did I learn anything from this experience? Two years later the answer would be, obviously, NO! Whatever pride I had left was put up for sale!

Pictures: The car just before bankruptcy--the last time it would look this good. While the money went the weight was coming back--here I was up to 217.25. :o(

Bad things happen to good people my friend, it's one of those laws of nature that no matter how unfair it seems..happens. But wisdom does not lie within our age, but the experiences that shape the life we live.[THUMBUP]

Unfortunately I didn't gain any wisdom from this experience and you know what they say--those who don't learn from the past are doomed, etc--well I was doomed--twice more!!![LOL]
