"20 Centimeters"--a Movie Review

November 15, 2006 / by greatmartin

So far this year I have been having a hard time finding 10 pictures for my top 10 list (with the holidays coming and more prestige pictures coming out it might be easier--I am hoping "Dreamgirls" is really good--I loved the Broadway show plus the new Judi Dench drama, and The History Boys plus Hugh Jackman movie, etc., live up to my expectations) but my bottom 10 list is overflowing--I have seen many, too many really bad movies.

20 Centimeters definitely will be on the latter--AWFUL!! Where to start? Okay, the camera work/photography was horrible--you never knew what the director was trying to do with some of the shots. The musical numbers--and there were way too many of them were bad and interfered with the story.

The story is basically about a narcoleptic, transgender prostitute who is planning for her final operation--ridding herself of the 20 centimeters (for those who don't know the metric system that's 8 inches) that still defines her as a man. As a man, or a woman, there is nothing attractive about Monica Cervera, the lead, and the full frontal nudity shot is grotesque--if it isn't digitally applied then I know nothing about making movies (I don't! And don't want to know--I love the 'magic' of movies and the less I know the mechanics of getting a shot the happier I am--I want to believe Superman flies!)

The musical numbers--which are suppose to be the draw here--are badly filmed, choreographed and sung.

The only saving graces are Pablo Puyol (whose frontal nudity scene is worth seeing) and the dwarf Miguel O'Dogherty who is a cutie.

The women in the movie are the most unattractive females I have seen in one film EVER!

There is a good story to be told here but it never is. Don't waste money and/or time seeing this in a theatre, on DVD or on cable TV.

I NEVER walk out on a movie but I was almost ready on this one--then the transformer knocked out all the electricity on the block--the theatre manager gave us a free ticket to come back some other time--so sometimes good things happen to good people in bad situations!
