"Adam & Steve"--a Movie Review

March 31, 2006 / by greatmartin

I've been waiting for a successful gay romantic comedy and it looks like I will still be waiting.

I always have trepidations when I see that a newcomer has directed in, wrote the screenplay and stars in a film--there are very few who have succeeded, especially when they are young and it smells like a vanity production--and my fears were born out here--Craig Chester should have let another person at least direct.

Parker Posey (the queen of Independent movies) and Malcolm Gets (most of you know him as the gay desk clerk in "NYPD" and since then has starred in 2 Broadway shows) are the true professionals here.

As a writer Mr. Chester gets in some good lines and looks at some issues--the movie itself is a little off the wall--the 2 male leads are stereotypes--one the promiscuous gay man not looking for love and the other looking for the white night.

There's a '2 step' showdown that, while excellently choreographed and executed, really doesn't belong in the movie and Adam's family is too way far out.

It's not a bad film--has a couple of good out loud laughs and a few tears--(along with a pretty gross scene and nudity)--but I'm still waiting for the excellent gay romantic comedy!

PS I have to get back to NYC--after 25 years the Village scenes, that use to be my turf, were completely unrecoganizeable.

Have you seen the Broken Hearts Club? It is not a strong romantic relationship story, but it does take a look at gay relationships in general.

Yes--in fact I have it among my gay themed video collection (which I am thinking of putting up for sale on eBay)--I enjoyed it but wasn't high on my ;ist of good movies
