Attention All USA Servers, Dishwashers, Etc.

January 9, 2007 / by greatmartin

kevinhere (of blogster--he is on my subscription and buddy list if you would like to read his very interesting blogs about his life, past and present, in Australia), from Australia, answered my question when I asked him what servers make in Australia with the following comment:

"BLOODY HELL!-----here the minimum rate for the lowest paid is $12 an hour and if the boss don't pay it --when you leave you can sue him through the government agency for back pay---the $12 is set by the industrial court and increases periodically by inflation-----on top of that 9% of wage is mandatory for the boss to place in your superfund towards your retirement"

I think he is still rolling on the floor with laughter when I told him what the minimum wage was here and what servers get paid. T'aint funny, folks!

Well, Australia is by far ahead of us!! We are spending all of our money on an unnecessary war. But then again, it was low before also..... For all our power, we are a very backwards country!![GLARE][GLARE]

Martin, do they get tips on top of that or is that in lieu of tips?

I'm not sure if the tip is automatically added to the check--when I was in Australia I remember tipping and being bowed down to--almost--I would also assume with American traffic increasing there the past few years tipping is also--I will ask Kevin.

Here is what he replied: "G'day martin
no -----tipping is complety voluntary--- in theflashiest places i'm told a jar is kept for any tips given to employees and divided equally each week--woe for anyone not putting into jar see in paper this morning democrats there want to increase your minimum wage from $6 to $8 --- perhaps they want to increase the sze of the steak on your plate"
