4 Books That Have Seen Me Through 38 Years

October 7, 2007 / by greatmartin

I've written about these books before--if you want to experience the happiness, the optimism and the joy of life I enjoy read all 4!!

"Passages" by Gail Sheehy--published in May 1976--from the age of your 20s to the 50s she presents a road map of adult life including the personality and sexual changes people (mainly men) go through--though we all like to think ourselves unique we all seem to go through the predictable crisis of life to one degree or another--see where you have been and/or where you are going.

"Loneliness: the Fear Of Love" by Ira Tanner--published in 1973--he talks about the difference of aloneness (which can be very rewarding humanly and creatively) and loneliness (whose primary cause is the fear of love) covering all aspects of both.

"I'm Okay--You're Okay" by Thomas A. Harris, M.D.--published in 1967--this has been my 'bible' since I became involved in Transactional Analysis in 1972--it shows how not okay people resort to harmful withdrawals, rituals, activities, pastimes and games for getting needed strokes though in most cases it is negative attention--and shows you how to turn it around. It is freeing people to liberate their adult effectiveness and getting rid of the defenseless child we all carry around in us.

"Born To Win" by Murial James, Ph.D. and Dorothy Jongeward, Ph.D--published in 1971--shows you how to increase your awareness of the real power you have to develop your ethical system, direct your own life, to make decisions, to enhance the lives of others by enhancing your own. It shows you how to live up to the title of the book.

I haven't heard anyone mention "I'm Okay - You're Okay" for a very long time. I remember when that book was discussed by everyone. You know, those books are dating you.[WINK][LOL][LOL][LOL]

I haven't read the new one but I assume it is updated to deal with all the technical changes and how they affect life today.

The New Passage is update for the younger crowd of today.
There is some passage there for the older folks.
This will help you the old one but the young one.
    Most gear to you folks.
Baby Boomer and on,just about the same.
    I found this to be a bore(Sorry,Martin)
Now that I am older the book does nothing for me.
If I was younger this would have help some.
If you read the first one, thats all you need.
    Good luck.[SMILE][SMILE][SMILE][SMILE]
