Have you noticed that as men get older and their hairline starts receding they let it grow long in the back (some even put it into a ponytail!), grow beards, etc., as if to say "I'm still a man!!"
I fell into that trap (not the ponytail, though LOL) and decided all it did was make me look old(er) so I stopped that nonsense and got a crewcut!
Over the years I have always fooled around with my head and facial hair trying to get 'that look' and, I think succeeded once or twice.
I've had a bare face, just mustaches, just beards (short, trimmed, long, medium), mustaches and beards, long side burns, no sideburns even an AFRO!!! In my 30s and 40s I would have the 'stylist' (that's when barbers starting charging higher prices!) spray gray into my temples--I thought it made me look distinguished and I really liked it. In my 50s that was no longer necessary--I had the gray! Now I am waiting for my hair/beard/mustache to be all white--I don't like the 'salt and pepper' look.
I really don't like to shave but when growing a beard (or mustache) it takes a lot longer and more work keeping it looking good. Now I get a crewcut twice a year and shave once a week--the rest of the week I have that actor's scraggly look which I think Don Johnson made fashionable on Miami Vice. :o)
My various 'hairs'--and to think at one time my hair was so thick I had to have it thinned out!!!

And back to this look next month!!
