An Inquiring Mind Wants to Know!! :O)

November 23, 2007 / by greatmartin

I 'fell' into being a waiter--I was 19--needed a job--my aunt was working in a restaurant--they needed another server--I discovered I loved it and so I was a server for 38 of my 48 working years.

My next 'career' was due to circumstances--I joined Weight Watchers, lost my weight, went to work for them, started the franchise in Memphis with a lover, we got 'divorced' and I opened my own organization--Our Weigh--so once again I 'fell' into a job.

What kind of work do you do? Did you plan on going into that field? Are you satisfied with the line of work or do you plan to change?

Would be interested in YOUR response!

After I burned out as a teacher, I began to take care of homeless people and animals. My shelter depends on volunteers and contributions. Many drug addicts and alcoholics found a cure by caring for the animals.

I've been involved, for 24 years as a 'buddy' for a AIDS group that works with HIV+ and/or AIDS teenagers who for many reasons end up on the street prostituting themselves for something to eat, a place to sleep, for drugs, etc.
It's hard but you have to be there for them as they have no one else![SAD]

even though I have my degree, I have been slaving at dead end jobs all my working life (factory shmuck, convenience store stooge, help desk moron). What I would really like to do is be a college professor (history) or a world famous and fabulously rich author (i.e J.K. Rowling or Stephen King). Alas, my talents were pi--ed away and I have no one to blame but moi.

Worked in security field for most of my adult life, shifted gears last year now I work in the health field, still working with the public but it is a more satisfying career[THUMBUP] But overall I don't think I have hit upon that one job that will bring me total happiness..

But why/how did you start in the security filed to begin with??
And you have hit the one job that would bring you total happiness--writing poetry--now you either have to start selling your poems or get a benefactor!![THUMBUP]

I was in the Army for 6 years(77-80)(82-85)and I was a Military Police K-9 Handler. I loved the job..ended up getting sick of the military way of life, found I was good at it. Continued doing the job till I grew disillusioned and burnt out, also suffered from a supervisor who was abusive. So I realized for the sake of my sanity I needed a change of scenery[THUMBUP]I now have a job where I feel I am making a difference, and enjoy the conditions in which I work[THUMBUP]Benefactor?? Where might I find one of those??[LOL][HEART][HEART]

My answer could be a blog! Heck, my parents thought I was old enough to work when I was 16 and a friend's father was a supervisor with hiring influence at a factory in Providence, so I went to work there for my first real job although it was only full time for the summer and on Saturdays during the school year. When I was 17, the factory relocated so I took a job at a jewelry manufacturer in my hometown, where I worked every weekday after school and every Saturday morning. After I graduated from high school, I went on to a junior college and did not work, but I quit school to "better plan for being married" (what a joke!)and took a job on an assembly line at a toy manufacturing factory. That turned out not to be as much fun as it sounds, so I tried a job at a box company...hated that...then tried out working at a luggage manufacturer...hated that (the last three jobs mentioned all took place in the course of three months.) I finally found a job I liked! I worked as a homemaker home-health aide for a non-profit agency and I did housecleaning and some personal care for those in need. I did this for years, which took me well into my early years of marriage. But, I did burn out from seeing so many dying people, so many lazy welfare recipients, so many people living in poverty conditions, etc. My father and grandfather ran a small engine repair service and I "fell into" a job there with them as the bookkeeper/inventory person/customer service counter person/etc. I worked there long after my grandfather retired and up until my father sold the business because of some health problems he was having. I never worked again until after my husband and I separated. I tried retail (in a ladie's clothing store) and hated it, so I quit. I tried working in a warehouse as a packer for a major jewelry company and hated it, so I quit. That's when I went back to school and learned the travel trade, graduated, and became a travel agent. I've been an agent (inside offices and working outside on-and-off) since the early 90's and absolutely loved it until a few years ago. I still do it and call myself a travel agent, but am looking to possibly move on to something else. I also "fell into" another job that I have been doing simultaneously. A cousin of mine was giving up some of her business accounts so she could take advantage of a great job opportunity. One of the accounts only required having a dedicated phone line put in so I could answer calls, book appointments, and provide simple information...so I took it on. I do like this work and working for this company and wouldn't mind if the job expanded in some way. On the side, I clean houses for the elderly, which is something else I "fell into" when a friend asked me if I was interested in cleaning her father's apartment. That lead to a "career" that I've been doing now for over 5 years. The corn maze job is something I spotted in the want ads and called on, got hired and fell in love with the job, so I return every fall to work there. I have loved and hated many a job, have felt good about some and do miss one or two, but I have never done any job that I had always dreamed of doing. Some are out-of-reach for me now, some may not be but are unlikely, but I do keep hoping and maybe....maybe....maybe someday, if I'm lucky, I'll be a tour hostess or a travel package planner or have an important job with Disney...something creative and hands-on. (Sorry, Martin, I told you this would be a blog. I did warn you!)

I work at the University of Hawai'i - Kapi'olani Community College in the American Sign Language/Interpreter Education Program and the Educational Interpreters and Assistants Project. I also work 12 hours a week for the Arts & Sciences Department and assisting all in travel documentation issues they maybe having!!! My official title is "Project Assistant". I LOVE MY JOB!!! I "fell" into this field too!!! It starts for me way back in Kindergarten. I was living in a small town called Belle Creek, Montana (try to find that one on a map) and they had a after school program and since my mom also had to pick my sister up from school and thought it would be easier to make one trip enrolled me into the program. I learned all kinds of things such as cooking and American Sign Language. Now the only part of ASL that really stuck was the manual alphabet. So as I got into high school in Lewistown, MT, I was really into my church and was part of the drama group that would go around to other towns in the area (Judith Gap, Stanford, etc) to do musical performances. We would play christian music and dance and use sign language as part of the performance. So when I was living in Arizona with my ex I was wanting to get out of the "Customer Service" jobs and into the office environment I started working for Kelly Services and was able to find some very temporary jobs. After several of these I finally got offered a job at the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ACDHH). They asked if I know ASL and I said all I knew was the manual alphabet and boom...I got the job!! I started as a receptionist and after learning more ASL and taking one class I was able to get hired on full time and moved up to being the assistant to the Executive Director. Well when I met David we decided to move out of Phoenix. I knew I wanted to be in the Deaf community so I checked things out in Hawai'i before coming here and found a job at the now closed Hawai'i Services on Deafness..I worked their for 2 months & then my friend Bradley told me about a job at KCC which is where i am now!! I LOVE MY JOB. I love ASL. I sucha beautiful language. I only wish I could get the grammer figured out!!! UGH!!! I am terrible with grammer!![THUMBUP]
