I uncovered my budgie cage yesterday to discover Leader--a male budgie--dead on the cage floor--I received Leader in 2003 when Jill decided to mate her two budgies--I got Leader & Spitfire out of the hatching--they joined Butch & Sky and the 4 got along great.
Unfortunately I didn't learn until too late that if you get 2 or more of the same breed they make up their own flock and won't interact with the human but that was okay as I loved just watching them and being their 'slave'--feeding them, giving them fresh water, treats now and then, listening to them 'talk' to, and interact with, each other, watching them fly around the room and, yes, occasionally, having 'recreational' sex. (As soon as I would take out my camera they would stop! :o) )
Spoke to my bird guru about replacing Leader--would a 'triangle' be created with 2 females, 1 male? Would his sibling, Spitfire, go through a mourning period? Would there be individual problems, an adjustment period needed?
Now understand something--they weren't/aren't my 'children'--they were/are my pets and losing a pet (just ask any pet owner) is a major downer so the last thing I needed to hear today was, "It's just a bird." from a neighbor--gentle, optimistic, positive thinking, happy Martin saw RED! It took all I could muster to not say a thing, turn and walk away.
Here are some pictures of Leader & siblings---hope he is happy 'over the rainbow bridge'!
Hatching
A month later--that is Leader on top!

I understand in losing a pet.[SAD]

I have a ready answer for anyone saying this. 'good thing they belonged to me and not you'. I've said it several times to people :-)

So sorry to hear about you losing leader. I know you kept him living a very happy life. I just assume that people who say things like that have never had the opportunity to really love and be loved back by a pet. They really have missed out by not ever having that wonderful experience. What is sad is when people like that actually get pets and never learn to properly care for them and love them. Maybe you can invite your neighbor over to interact with your other birds and hopefully she/he will begin to learn what love really is and how they give back so much more than they get.

I like that last picture of the 3 on the head.
