If you didn't see this on PBS last night, please, please, watch for a rebroadcast and DON'T MISS IT! (Unfortunately because of rights involved it won't be recorded on DVD)
An absolutely beautiful, glorious Broadway musical. Though it is not the same thing as sitting in the theatre it is as close to it as you can get. (It is going on tour and I know when it gets here I will definitely be seeing it.)
A very touching love story based on the novella (and made into a movie with Olivia Dehaviland and Yvette Mimiou--I know I spelled the latter's last name wrong and to think I was once in love with her!) of the same name.
A few laughs, many tears and a score that grabs you and, after more hearings, stays with you by Adam Guetal. (Wish I had a credit list in front of me so I could spell the names correctly!)
As far as I can tell Victoria Clark playing the lead was/is the only one from the original cast and it is a STAR turn--magnificent--certainly deserved the Tony she won--I am so glad her performance was captured for all time. The emotions on Clark's face when she realizes what she must , and will, do is acting at it's finest!
Though others who have seen the original cast may quibble about this cast versus the other I was impressed with the two young leads and all the featured players.
The moving sets, the lighting, costumes, etc. are perfect--this musical is an old fashioned musical done with a today sensibility.
Please see this on PBS and make a contribution for their bringing such a work of art--and be sure to see it when and if the tour comes to your city--I am unable to imagine how it will affect me when I am sitting in a theatre watching it. I taped it last night and plan to watch it quite a few more times!
And to think the government wants to stop ALL funding to PBS in a couple of years--obviously culture is playing less and less a role in the USA--how sad.
