A New Phenomenon for Me!!!

December 29, 2007 / by greatmartin

I have always heard/read that the older you get the less sleep you need--I haven't found that to be true--in fact just the opposite.

I have never been a take a nap in the afternoon type of guy unless I spent a few hours at the beach and the sun, water and exercising and then when I got home I'd fall in bed for a couple of hours.

In fact whenever I did take a nap I would stay up later that evening and, basically, getting the same hours of sleep I would on any other day.

When I turned 70 I found myself getting that drowsy feeling around 4 PM but would work through it. I certainly get enough sleep at night--8-9 hours--and since I get up at 11 AM how can I be tired 5 hours later?? It's not that I am doing any physical labor to tire me out.

In the past couple of months I found that I was losing the battle and have been taking an hour to two nap around 5 PM. It doesn't happen every day but enough to bother me!!

Though I love to sleep and have no problem falling asleep I resent the fact that I am now, a few days a week, getting between 10-11 hours of sleep--I don't have time for it!!!!

I am disturbed enough by it that I plan to mention it to my doctor on my next visit.

Okay, I know many of you have problems sleeping, getting to sleep, are sleep deprived and really don't want to hear this but I don't know what to think and/or do about it!!!

Well that a hard one to talk about.Like you said to talk to your doctor.
Do not think that this is serious and its bother you about your sleeping habit.
both of us get a good night sleep as we are up at five.
Been doing this for quite awhile,I see Mike off to work and then get my self ready for my game at seven thirty. In between get Buffy out to do his thing and check the house before I leave. This is going to be weird when Mike speaking of retiring next year.We will have to change our ways and this could be spooky.Well not going to worry about till the time comes.
Maybe the body is changing some and trying to tell you something

Mike is 'talking' but doesn't mean he will--ask any couple--when both are retired A LOT of changes have to take place!!!

Have you changed any medications or times you are taking them? Please ask the doctor.I doubt it is anything serious.Take the naps, your body is telling you that you need sleep.[SMILE][HEART]Laurie

Meds can do that. Your energy levels and relax levels can change to spurts instead of long stretches, it could be that. Best thing to do is mention it to your doc, just like you said. My dad automatically naps now in the mid-afternoon, maybe for about an hour...something he never, ever did before. His bedtime at night and his rising time in the morning are still the same, so he's getting an extra hour or so sleep a day now. His doc said he was fine, it's just he needs and uses a bit more energy to do the things he usually does during the day, so his body needs the little extra rest/sleep. [HEART]

I've been taking the same meds for over 7 years so I don't know if it's that--maybe it is just something that happens with age as most people over 70 take naps--but then again most people over 70 are given medications whether they need them or not!!
