It's Rough Being Retired--a Typical Day

March 4, 2006 / by greatmartin

I got up at 11 AM--don't hate me as I don't go to sleep until 3-4 AM--feed and gave the birds fresh water--read the paper including doing the crossword (in ink!)

My friend Gino took me to Clive's bird shop--had to get bird supplies--fell in love with a very young pair of tiels (they are still on one hand fed a meal a day but were digging into the food cup)--one is a female the other a male--Gino reminded me that a) I couldn't afford $190 let alone $90 for one 2) That I would have inbreeding and egg problems--I left without birds and with a heavy heart.

Then we went to Barnes & Noble--I had accumulated $50 in free gift cards at MyPoints.com (a great stuff and very easy to get buying points without spending a penny.) After looking around for an hour I walked out with "Blogging For Dummies" and "eBay for dummies"--after selling about $1,000 in books and video tapes i decided to learn more about the later--hey, better late than never :o)

After that to Border's where i bought 3 more books (again with free gift card): Rita Mae Brown's (a great writer) and her cat Sneaky Pie Brown's book "Cat's Eyewitness"--the 15th book in the series--if you haven't read her before (Rita Mae, not Sneaky Pie, I mean) I highly suggest "Rubyfruit Jungle" which is a classic bio and "Starting From Scratch", a MUST read for all writers. Also got 2 true crime books: "Sleepers" by Lorenzo Carcaterra and "A Perfect Husband" by Aphrodite Jones (I just LOVE her name!).

After that lunch at Bennigan's where I had a combo plate of Sirloin steak, Mediteriann chicken and Creole shrimp with a baked potato and a salad with blu cheese--we topped it off splitting a hot fudge brownie with ice cream and whipped cream.

Then I picked up my shirts from the cleaners, came home and gave the birds their 5 PM veggie treat.

Now I am reading the blogs waiting for me, then answering e-mail and talking to a few friends about where to have supper.

Do you think making all these decisions in one afternoon is easy??? And that you have it hard??

DON'T HATE ME :o)

Yes! Retirement is great. Too bad I abused my body so much on the way to this life. LOL!

If you can still play golf you didn't abuse it THAT badly[SMILE]

"If you can still play golf you didn't abuse it THAT badly"

LOL! Let me see? I have arthritis in both knees, in one hip and in the fingers of my right hand. I have had one knee replace and have a metal piece in my left foot.

I have high blood pressure and high Cholesteral.

That is the way it is. I am pleased that I can still hit a golf ball around a bit. However, I am also saddened that I can no longer jog or play racquetball.

I have had great times over the years and this is nature's way of having me pay for it all. LOL!

Not too late--I HAD high cholesterol and it is now under 150--diet & zocor--I don't miss jogging and/or racquetball because I never played them--I am the anti-exercise man--got my weight undercontrol in 2000 after having conjestive heart failure (a great motivator!) and have rheumotoid arthritis in shoulder and wrist but under control with medicine--for a guy who never even took an aspirin before he was 60 I now take 8 meds[SMILE] Never too late to make up for the abuse![SMILE]

have you read any of "The Cat Who..." books by Lilian Jackson Braun? She started the mystery series in the 50's and, after a break, started writing again in the 80's. The last couple have been bad and I fear she may have passed away leavng a ghost writer to fill in, but the earlier works are great. They're my dirty little secret....[LOL]
I'll have to check out Rita Mae.

I love to read... true crime being up high on the list (perverse curiosity as to why we do what we do to one another); love bios, just bought one at Border's about Mozart, can't wait to dig in... gosh, I'd love to at least drop back to working part-time, but can't afford it. I have 12-1/2 years until retirement...hope I still have my mind and body well functioning by that time. Nope, don't hate cha, but there may be some envy exuding from my being right now! [TONGUE]
