"Summer Storm"--a Movie Review

May 16, 2006 / by greatmartin

First, up front, let me say this is a sweet movie. Maybe after so many years of seeing/reading coming out/coming of age stories and going through the process there is very little left to say about the process.
"Am I gay? Am I not gay? Who should I tell? Who shouldn't I tell? Should I just come out or should I take small steps?, etc."
There is not only the physical process but the mental process--sometimes it comes quickly, sometimes slowly. Whether gay or non-gay there is the first kiss, the first acceptance, first rejection, falling in love, breaking up and so on.
I came out when I was 12, puzzled about it and in my teens was happy that I accepted it as fact.
Back to the movie--though it was only 98 minutes long it should have been cut by about 10 minutes--all the arty/farty director/cameraman nature scenes really didn't add anything--just the physicality of the locations were beautiful.
Except for a few of the adult roles most of the roles were played by (for me) too skinny boys--the most attractive one was the 'macho egotist' gay one.
I will give the director kudos for not doing the frontal nudity scenes plus not having the gay team be stereotypes but a mixed bag.
The film is in German with subtitles--many of the latter were white on a light background but the story is easy enough to follow. The soundtrack were all American songs.
It's not a ground breaking film but a sweet, pleasant and no 'special' affects--you don't have to check your brains when you enter the theatre.

Sounds like a really good movie. You gave it a much better review than The Advocate did.

Most of the time I don't read reviews until after I have seen the movies.[SMILE]
