Tattoos and Body Piercings--information Wanted

August 18, 2007 / by greatmartin

I am not a fan of tattoos or body piercings and would like to understand why people have them done.

I can understand a woman piercing her ears to wear earrings but why 6 piercings?? Why would a man pierce his ears?

Why tongue piercings? Belly button? Tit rings? Metal through penises?

I, once, being a young kid in the Marines, and drunk, almost got a tattoo but sobered up when I saw the needle! :O)

I can understand a discreet tattoo, even visible ones on the ankle but what about those full body tattoos or arms covered with ink? I certainly don't find them attractive--in fact in most cases they are a turnoff--to me.

While some have obviously spent lots of thought and time getting all these tattoos and some are attractive on canvas but in no way do I see them as ART when on a human being.

What do you see in these things? Why do you have them done? What am I missing? What am I not seeing? (Ummm--that's a contradiction!)

Nothing objectionable there--I can see 1 earing--where is Moma's tattoo? When did you have it done? While in the Navy??

I have my left earlobe pierced. I wear a diamond stud. When Ray and I moved in together, I got him a ring. It originally had five diamonds. I had two taken out and replaced with our birthstones. The diamonds were used to make the studs, and we each wear one.
I think you know about my moon tattoo. I think both are just another way of adorning yourself like rings or other jewelry and clothing. It is a way to let you personality show. It is not for everyone, though.

I have 3 tattoos. One on my right shoulder that I got when I was 18 & sucidial, it is the Japanese symbol for death. It's incomplete so I am sometime soon gonna have something put over it. My 2nd tattoo was a Kokpelli...i got it in Olympia, WA and it represents my summer in Yellowstone National Park. My 3rd tattoo is a Tribal design and I got when I lived in Phoenix, AZ. It is a map to my secret treasure (right in the middle it becomes an arrow & points right into my butt crack). I used to have my nipples pierced...loved that but it really made my nipples senstiive...which can be fun!!

I have a loop earing in my left ear. I wanted it, so I did it. I am going to replace it with a diamond if I ever get around to doing it. I have a large tribal on my upper right arm. I also have a new series of chinese characters on my upper left arm. The characters represent homosexuality, power, success and love.

Oh, and both of my nipples were pierced. Only one remains because I had to remove one ring during and illness. I am going to get it done again.

Hmmm...I don't want to be too serious here but, as a person with two small tattoos and multiple ear piercings, let me say this: Some get tattoos because they see them as art and feel the body is the canvas, therefore a personal expression that will be "viewed" by others and appreciated by art lovers of that type. (I am not a member of this type, but allow for those who are.) Some get/use their tattoos more like a memorial or monument to preserve a name, a statement, a memory, a way of life, etc. such as a statue or marker or written document would do. The "message" of the tattoo will be stated with conviction as a tribute or declaration. The difference here is that these messages can be taken with the person anywhere he/she goes as opposed to it being isolated on a shelf or in a fixed location. (Instead of having to "go to it", it can be "taken with you".) The last example of tattooing I'm going to comment on is the silly, for fun, frivolous, look-at-me, type of expression. On a dare or when a bit drunk or with other peer pressure people or when just young and in that "whatever" frame of mind, let's get a tattoo! It might be pretty or dirty or evil or risque, but it's fun and an expression of the time frame the person is in. It will draw attention and that may very well be the reason for the tattoo in the first place. (Little thought is given to what that tattoo might look like or mean when it's buried within the wrinkles of age, the body's form after gravity has taken it's toll, within a meshing of stretch marks, etc. The reason being is that when most of these tattoos are gotten, the people are in their "now is forever" time of life.)[COOL]

I just never had the desire to get a tattoo and/or a piercing--that's why I was wondering why people do--thanks for the explanation![THUMBUP]

1st tattoo was a dare but discreet and unique and I love it[HEART] 2nd tattoo was a bonding experience with my mom, sis and I and I love it[HEART] 3rd tattoo was me trying to find myself and it is kinda big and not something I'd want everyone to see[HEART]I got my nose pierced this week and it was a bonding thing again (my mom, sis, my bf and I). I kinda like it.

Now I must also mention that I hear many people saying...they like the pain...or the sensation of how it feels to be tatt'd or pierced.[BLUSH]
