First, and foremost, Daniel Day-Lewis gives a monumental performance as Daniel Plainview. He gives a master class in acting though you forget he is acting and is just being the character. Every part of his body is this man from all parts of his face to the use of his legs. If for no other reason this film should be seen for one of the best male film performances ever given on screen.
I was hesitant about seeing this film because it seemed to be another one filled with violence and I was, pleasantly, surprised that it wasn't. There are two scenes of violence but like in the 'old days' it is more indicated than shown. There is one beating that all you see is the hand and the instrument used and then, when it is all over, the body. I didn't turn my head away once!Laughing
All the performances are quite good and Paul Dano has two powerful scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis and holds his own except for a minute or two. Unfortunately all the actors in the movie are almost unseen when Daniel is on screen and he is on screen 99% of the time.
I found the music score interesting--while loud at times even then it fits the times and moods. All technical aspects of the film are excellent from direction to camera work, lighting, costumes and sound.
BUT and this is a big but!!! This is a film of biblical and epic proportions dealing with many different relationships and aspects of man and, yet, in no way did I get involved emotionally and even in scenes where I would normally feel touched I wasn't. It may have been that I was too caught up in watching Daniel Day-Lewis's performance to get into the story itself.
As with many pictures these days it was too long by about 15 minutes running 2 hours and thirty minutes when some scenes weren't necessary or ran on a few minutes too long. Two scenes left me puzzled both with the same arc in the plot-- the scene on the beach and the exposure of Henry--I didn't understand how the latter came about though I understood the why of the exposure.
A must see movie for the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis!!!
