I Am a Veteran---or Am I??? Part 1

November 11, 2007 / by greatmartin

Dictionary defintion of a veteran: 1) Old and experienced 2) One who served in the Armed Forces 3) a person of long service in same position

On February 12, 1954 I was enlisted and was accepted in The United States Marine Corps.

I was immediately sent to Parris Island, South Carolina for 3 months of boot camp and I remember every agonizing day in that swamp infested area! LOL

I 'graduated' on April 29, 1954

and was sent to Camp Pendleton, California to train in the hills. Though the Korean War was 'over'--more about that later--our company was being sent there to help with the 'clean up'.

We were packed into a ship like sardines and sailed to Korea arriving at the start Autumn BUT someone forgot to tell the troops over there (both sides) that the war was over and there were still 'skirmishes' happening.

Within 2 months I was to kill the first human being, face to face, that I still have nightmares about.

A man in uniform! Ohhhh, how handsome! Yes, sir, you are a veteran because it doesn't only mean you served in the military, but you lived the life that goes along with it. That last line says what a veteran is...what a military person is prepared to do, might do, have to live through, and then have to live with for the rest of his or her life. You know what being a veteran means and feels like so you should know that everyone who remembers and appreciates veterans wants to let their respect be heard. No matter what else may be wrong in the lives of veterans, we want to let veterans know that we salute them. Therefore, we salute you! [THUMBUP]
